2005 Emmy Nominated: Supporting Actor, The West Wing

2006 Emmy Winner: Supporting Actor, The West Wing

"ORIGINALITY is unexplored territory. You get there by carrying a canoe - you can't take a taxi." -Alan Alda

Born Alphonso Joseph D'Abruzzo on January 28 1936 in New York City, Alan Alda contracted the "Al" from "Alphonso" and the "da" from "D'Abruzzo" to create his stage name. From the ages of 7-9 he was bedridden with polio, but nothing has kept him down since. During his army years, he went AWOL every weekend to be with the woman whom he would later marry. His commitment to her, and later to his three daughters was so strong that he commuted from LA to New Jersey while working on "M*A*S*H*" to avoid uprooting his family.

Alan Alda first television role was on "Secret File, U.S.A" back in 1955. In the intervening years he has appeared on shows ranging from "M*A*S*H*" to "The West Wing." Alan celebrated his first Emmy win by doing a cartwheel down the aisle to accept it. Since then he has won five Emmys and has become to only person to win an Emmy for each acting, writing and directing. Recent film and television appearances include "The West Wing" and "The Aviator."

Alan is nominated for 2005's Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series for his role as Senator Arnold Vinivk on NBC's "The West Wing."
