Ellen Degeneres

2004 Emmy Nominated: Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program, Ellen DeGeneres: Here and Now

In 1982 Ellen won Showtime's Funniest Person in America contest, and shortly afterwards moved to San Francisco, a center of stand-up comedy. In 1986, she made her debut on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, and Carson, being very impressed by her act, invited her to sit on his couch, an act reserved for only the most talented comedians, making her the first female comis ever to be awarded the honour. In the mid-nineties, after a few failed attempts at television, ABC released "Ellen," which garnered her two Emmy nominations in its four-year run. Amid much controversy and drooping ratings, Ellen and her character on the show both came out of the closet, but despite such a gutsy move the show was still canceled. This was all followed up by a very public relationship with Anne Heche, a few generally accepted movies, and eventually a turn in the wildly popular Finding Nemo and her own television talk show.

Actress/comedienne Ellen Degeneres is nominated for her comedy show "Ellen Degeneres: Here and Now" in 2004.
