2003 Emmy Nominated: Supporting Actress, Hysterical Blindness

An actress who never quite reached the ranks of stardom but who has given some extremely moving and capable performances, especially in the films written and directed by her late husband, John Cassavetes. After achieving success on Broadway in the late 1950s, Rowlands went to Hollywood and starred in such films as The High Cost of Loving, Lonely Are the Brave, The Spiral Road, and A Child Is Waiting. But it was her later work in Cassavetes' films including Faces, Minnie and Moskowitz, Opening Night, and Love Streams-that attracted critics and audiences to this strong, attractive actress and her raw, hold-nothing-back performances. Rowlands' work as a woman suffering a nervous breakdown in A Woman Under the Influence and an exmobster's girlfriend in Gloria earned her Best Actress Oscar nominations. She continues to work sporadically in films such as Tempest, Light of Day, Another Woman, Once Around and Night on Earth, and has given several acclaimed performances on TV, winning Emmys for The Betty Ford Story and Face of a Stranger. Her son, Nick Cassavetes, is also an actor.

Gena Rowlands is nominated for 2003's Supporting Actress in a Mini Series or Movie for her performance in "Hysterical Blindness".
