The son of two school teachers, Spader dropped out of high school in grade eleven, after which he shoveled manure, bused tables and taught yoga before landing the first of his roles. Spader won a Best Actor award at Cannes in 1989 for his role in "Sex, Lies, and Videotape." He has two sons, Sebastien and Elijah, with his wife Victoria.
