Kenneth Branagh

2005 Emmy Nominated: Lead Actor, Warm Springs

"I feel more Irish than English. I feel freer than British, more visceral, with a love of language. Shot through with fire in some way. That's why I resist being appropriated as the current repository of Shakespeare on the planet. That would mean I'm part of the English cultural elite, and I am utterly ill-fitted to be." -Kenneth Branagh

Kenneth Branagh was born on 10 December, 1960 in Belfast Northern Ireland. There he grew up in a poor neighborhood next to a tobacco processing plant. The family moved to England when young Kenneth was 9, where he first saw Hamlet performed at the age of 15. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company at 23, and went on to play the lead in "Henry V" and "Romeo and Juliet." After leaving the company, he founded his own Renaissance Theatre Company, with the patronage of Prince Charles. After entering the world of film, Kenneth starred and directed "Henry V;" a bloody and visceral film interpretation of Shakespeare's play. Branagh received Oscar nominations for both Best Actor and Best Director for his work on the film. He has since appeared in both Shakespearian and non-Shakespearian plays and films, including "How to Kill Your Neighbor's Dog" and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets."

Kenneth Branagh is nominated for 2005's Outstanding Lead Actor In A Mini Series Or A Movie for his role as Franklin Delano Roosevelt in HBO's "Warm Springs."
