Born in a Chicago suburb, Hayes attended Illinois State University where he studied music and theatre, and excelled at both. He put himself through college by playing piano for voice lessons and working in community theatre before the brief period spent with the Second City comedy troup. After that was a musical director for local theatre, which lasted until he got bored and moved to LA. It was here that landed a part in a series of commercials, which drew the eyes of the creators of Will & Grace. He was offered the job, alongside fellow Emmy hopeful Megan Mullally, and has grew in popularity eveer since.

Sean Hayes is nominated for 2005's Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series for his role on "Will and Grace ".
