Born Susan Williams Stockard, Channing was brought up on New York's Upper East Side but travelled extensively due to her father's work. Stockard earned her BA in American History and Literature at Radcliffe College where she met many fellow students who would go on to become successful actors as well, including Tommy Lee Jones and John Lithgow. Despite many ups and downs in her career, Stockard achieved longevity through her role as "Rizzo" in the movie version of Grease (she was playing a teenager at 34 years old!), as well as a Tony for "A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg" and an Oscar nomination for the movie reprisal of her Broadway role in Six Degrees of Separation.

Stockard Channing is nominated for 2005's Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role on "The West Wing."
