Whoopi Goldberg was born on November 13 in New York City with the name Caryn Elaine Johnson. While performing small Broadway parts she worked in a funeral home applying makeup to corpses and as a bricklayer. She moved to LA and worked in improve, until her career caught fire. She won an Oscar for her role as a psychic medium in "Ghost." Whoopi also had a smash hit with "Sister Act" and played the role of the learned and traveled Guinan, on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." She was nicknamed Whoopi, as in "whoopee cushion" and took the name Goldberg from her Jewish heritage.

Goldberg is nominated for 2005's Outstanding Individual Performance In A Variety Or Music Program for her performance in "Whoopi Back to Broadway" on HBO.
